As populism continues to strengthen globally and the world reacts to historic shifts in the global order in the form of war, trade policy and a challenge to the post WWII global rules-based settlement. Much of the future of Britain and those invested in building a fairer society will be determined by these global headwinds.
In this panel, we will consider how the change in the political climate in the UK fits into broader trends in the politics of North America, Europe and Australia. Is this a moment of unrelenting populist ascendency and the creation of a new international order? What can we learn from those pushing back at populism across these different contexts? How best should Britain react to this moment of such huge international flux? What are the emerging strategies and playbooks globally for delivering positive social change that build fairer, democratic societies?
We’d like panelists to consider whether there is a possibility of new and innovative global coalitions emerging that strengthen our democratic norms and deliver fairer societies. Or whether this is a time for a relentless focus on the domestic.
