There is good evidence that the American professoriat tilts heavily to the left. But higher education’s defenders often insist this bias doesn’t affect teaching or research because professors can leave their politics at the classroom door. Over the past year, a spate of compelling research—by Richard D. Kahlenberg of the Progressive Policy Institute, Timothy K. Minella of the Goldwater Institute, and Jon A. Shields of Claremont McKenna College—has shown how, in reality, ideology does distort what is written, read, and said on campus.
On April 16, Frederick M. Hess, director of education policy studies at AEI, will discuss this research with the authors and explore what their findings mean—and what might be done to address the issues they raise.
