How Should Educators Teach America’s Story?

  • April 22, 2026 - 1:00 pm ET

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, educators at the K-12 and higher education levels are grappling with the best way to educate young people about the United States. What is the proper balance between explaining the grand ideals of liberty and equality found in the Declaration of Independence and acknowledging the many ways America has fallen short?

The webinar will include discussion of the findings of the new PPI report by Richard D. Kahlenberg and Lief Lin, entitled, The Distortion of American Studies: How the Field’s Leading Journal Has Embraced a Worldview as Slanted as Donald Trump’s. The report’s findings are summarized in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal.

Panelists:

  • Richard D. Kahlenberg, Director, American Identity Project, Progressive Policy Institute
  • Caroline Levander, Carlson Professor in the Humanities, Rice University
  • Lief Lin, Policy Research Fellow, Progressive Policy Institute K-12 Teacher (TK)
  • Moderator: Greg Toppo, The 74
