College sports in the U.S. are undergoing a tectonic shift. A decade of antitrust cases contesting NCAA restrictions on athlete compensation, state-level “NIL” laws, and pressures to unionize college athletes are all in play. And a proposed multi-billion dollar legal settlement promises to reshape the model of college sports, with serious consequences for all except the most lucrative Division I men’s football and basketball programs.
The Progressive Policy Institute’s (PPI’s) “Game Changers” project is unpacking the impact of these changes. PPI’s focus is on the shifting balance between amateurism and professionalism, opportunity and equity in college sports, and the appropriate policy tools for managing change. PPI will facilitate a briefing on September 19, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. in Rayburn Room 2060.
