Running the Mississippi Marathon: How Other States Can Start Racing

  • May 8, 2026 - 11:00 am ET

Mississippi has delivered one of the most remarkable educational turnarounds in our nation’s history in the last twenty years. The media has extensively covered Mississippi’s literacy work, and states are beginning to try to replicate some of the same strategies. What policymakers may not realize is that the story is larger and more complex than the adoption of any single policy, and states should understand this complexity if they want to find the same success.

The webinar included a discussion of the findings of the new PPI report by Rachel Canter, Inside the Mississippi Marathon, as well as her companion essay in The Atlantic, about what states should know about this long-term success story.

Our expert panelists included:

  • Rachel Canter, Director of Education Policy, Reinventing America’s Schools, and Author of “Inside the Mississippi Marathon”
  • Judge Gray Tollison, Circuit Court Judge and former Chair of the Senate Education Committee

Moderated by:

  • Chad Alderman, Columnist at The 74 and founder of Read Not Guess
The webinar is part of a series co-sponsored by the Progressive Policy Institute and The 74 Million education magazine.
