Tax Reform Now: Cutting Rates and Deficits

Apr 12, 2011 | 2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT

Sens. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Dave Cote, Chairman and CEO of Honeywell International discussed the urgent need for comprehensive reform of the U.S. tax code.

The event featured a panel on comprehensive tax reform, which discussed the Fiscal Commission’s “Zero Plan” which dramatically lowers rates, broadens the tax base, and reduces the deficit. A second panel discussed possible fail-safes and triggers designed to cut tax expenditures across the board in order to force action on reform. The event marked the release of a new PPI report by Paul Weinstein and Marc Goldwein entitled “Less is More: The Modified Zero Plan for Tax Reform.” This paper offers an in depth analysis of the Fiscal Commission’s “Zero” and “Modified Zero” tax reform plans.

This event was cosponsored by The Progressive Policy Institute and The Moment of Truth project, and was hosted by the Center for Advance Governmental Studies at The Johns Hopkins University.
