One of Maine’s top exports, seafood, was initially in Canada’s crosshairs, with Ottawa levying new tariffs on U.S. lobster and seafood. But Canada quickly scrapped those levies after protests from seafood processing companies in Canada, which rely on U.S. imports, according to Ed Gresser, a former assistant U.S. trade representative now working at the Progressive Policy Institute.

West Virginia has become more reliant on Canada as an export market in recent years largely due to its auto sector. The state’s roughly $2 billion in total exports to Canada last year included $972 million in auto parts and $372 million in engines and power transition equipment, according to Gresser.
